Nexplanon is one of the most effective forms of birth control

Out of all the birth control methods, the Nexplanon device is statistically one of the most effective birth control methods. The Nexplanon is a soft plastic device measuring only a few centimeters, that can be placed in the inside of the arm to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The Nexplanon has been around for several years, establishing its safety profile and benefit.

Contactive implants are generally one hormone called progesterone or from the progestin class of hormones. They prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus, thus prohibiting sperm from entering the uterus, decrease motility of eggs leaving the ovaries and making their way into the uterus, and also potentially stop ovulation from happening at all, that is, the ovaries releasing eggs. The benefits of this medication include generally bleeding less while you’re on your period, with many women no longer having any bleeding while on their periods while they have the implant in place. The main side effects can include bleeding or spotting while not on your period, breast tenderness, and potential mood changes. These are usually mild, if any. Luckily, if you do experience any of these and they don’t go away, you can have the implant removed at any time. The key reasons not to get an implant include being pregnant, liver problems or tumors, breast cancer, or history of blood clots in your lungs or legs.

Preparing for the nexplanon

NexplanonThe nexplanon is usually placed just below the skin near your tricep muscle/ on the inside of your non-dominant arm. This is an ideal location for the device as the area is generally well protected by your body and not noticed much. The device generally does not move once implanted and can stay in the arm for several years. There is no special preparation for the device other than your gynecologist making sure you are not pregnant prior to placing the contraceptive implant. Your Midtown gynecologist may ask you some of the following questions

  • Are you currently on a method of contraception other than condoms
  • When was your last menstrual period
  • Have you had intercourse since your last period

As long as you meet the criteria, you are ready to have the implant placed

Placement and removal

Nexplanon

The contraceptive implant is placed on the inner portion of the arm. The first step will be to confirm you are not pregnant. After this has been established, your gynecologist in NYC will ask you to lie down on the examination chair with your non dominant arm up. After evaluating for any abnormalities or potential blood vessels with a visual inspection, the gynecologist will now clear the desired implantation site with an antiseptic. Then, with a tiny needle, the doctor will inject numbing medication. After noting that the area is totally numb, they will get the implant, which comes in an injecting device, and inject the implant under the skin. The doctor will ask you to feel the device to confirm its location under the skin, and now they will wrap the area with a bandage to prevent bleeding.

Nexplanon may reduce how much you bleed while on your period

After the procedure the numbing medication will take several hours to wear off. During this time you may start to feel pins and needles as you regain sensation. For the next day or two, you may feel like you have a small bruise in the area, this is totally normal. If the area is not getting larger, red, or bruising is increasing, it most likely is normal however any and all concerns should always be evaluated by your doctor.

Removing the device is similar in which the area will be cleaned first, then numbing medication injected. A tiny incision will be made above the device and the device removed. No stitches are usually needed, just a bandaid.
